In September 2022, Alex took a bold step that many accountants only dream of—he transitioned from the structured environment of the Big Four in Eastern Europe to a boutique insolvency and fraud investigation firm, in the British Virgin Islands (BVIs). With a rich career spanning very senior roles within the Big Four and Banking, Alex’s journey exemplifies the rewards and challenges of making an international career move. “Now that my kids are grown up, my wife and I were looking for a new challenge,” Alex shares, encouraging others in his mature age group to consider similar opportunities.
Embracing New Challenges
Transitioning from a Big Four firm to a boutique environment in a common law jurisdiction was no small feat. Alex shares, “I knew it would be a huge adjustment moving from civil law into a common law legal environment. I was hired as a manager and accepted there was a learning curve.” His dedication to learning and adapting paid off, with the firm’s patience and investment in his development being key factors in his successful transition.
The Power of Continuous Learning
Alex’s commitment to continuous learning is evident in his achievements. He completed environmental certification and is currently undergoing a rigorous cross-border insolvency training program. “Our CEO, has been incredibly supportive. The firm paid for my first course, and I took the initiative to finance additional training myself to stay technically updated,” Alex explains. His hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed, leading to his promotion to Senior Manager.
Life in the British Virgin Islands
Beyond professional growth, the move to the BVIs has enriched Alex’s personal life. He describes the island as a paradise, offering sunshine, seaside, and a plethora of activities. “Professionally, I have the opportunity to do new things in a unique environment. Personally, I couldn’t be happier—there’s a variety of beaches, vibrant social life, and endless activities.”
Adapting to life on the island, Alex has immersed himself in the local community. From joining a sea rescue NGO to engaging in social events, he and his wife have integrated well into their new home. “The social side here is very easy to navigate. My wife is part of a ladies’ club with monthly meetings and tennis events. We constantly have something to do every week.”
Overcoming Challenges
Despite the idyllic setting, Alex acknowledges the challenges. The cost of living, especially accommodation, is high. “You accept that your tax is the accommodation costs,” he notes. Finding the right place took time, but now he enjoys a beautiful two-bedroom cottage with stunning sea views.
Professional and Personal Growth
Reflecting on his journey, Alex highlights the importance of setting realistic expectations and being open to new experiences. His story is a testament to the fact that with determination and the right support, international moves can lead to both professional and personal fulfilment.
Alex’s adventure in the BVIs is a shining example for accountants considering a career move. His journey underscores the potential for growth, learning, and happiness that comes with embracing new opportunities.
As Alex continues to thrive in his new role and environment, his story serves as an inspiration to all who aspire to take their careers to international heights.
