Swap the commute for turquoise water, pink-sand beaches and an international financial centre where some of the world’s most sophisticated businesses are on your doorstep. This is an opportunity to take your U.S. Tax career to Bermuda, joining a leading Big Four firm where you’ll manage complex financial-services work, lead talented professionals and build your international profile – while living on an island that can make the end of the working day feel very different. Bermuda offers an unusual combination. Hamilton is a serious global business centre, yet outside the office you’re surrounded by clear Atlantic water, colourful neighbourhoods and a subtropical landscape. Weekends can mean sailing, diving, running along the coast or simply finding a quiet stretch of beach. And when you want to travel, the US East Coast is only a few hours away, with direct connections also available to major international cities. The opportunity: We are recruiting a U.S. Tax Manager for the Bermuda practice of a leading Big Four professional services firm. This is more than a compliance management position. You’ll work with sophisticated international businesses, helping them understand their U.S. tax obligations, manage risk and make informed decisions around planning, structuring and strategy. Bermuda’s position as a major international financial centre makes the client exposure particularly interesting. Expect opportunities to work across areas including insurance and reinsurance, hedge funds, private equity and other investment partnerships, dealing with complex U.S. tax matters in an international environment. At Manager level, you will also have genuine ownership. You’ll lead engagements, manage people, develop relationships with clients and help shape the quality of work delivered by the wider team. What will you be doing? Your responsibilities will include:
- Leading U.S. tax compliance and advisory engagements from planning through to completion.
- Reviewing U.S. tax returns and financial information for partnerships, corporations, investment structures and/or insurance businesses.
- Advising clients on U.S. tax planning, compliance, structuring and evolving regulatory requirements.
- Managing engagement budgets, resources, deadlines and deliverables.
- Identifying how individual tax issues interact with the wider commercial and regulatory picture.
- Building trusted relationships with senior client stakeholders and discussing complex tax matters with confidence.
- Supervising, coaching and mentoring more junior tax professionals.
- Using the review process to develop technical knowledge across the team rather than simply correcting work.
- Maintaining high technical, professional, quality and independence standards.
- Working collaboratively with other managers and senior leaders to deliver outstanding client service.
You will need to be comfortable taking ownership. That can mean resolving difficult technical questions, having challenging conversations, balancing competing deadlines and knowing when an issue needs to be escalated. What are we looking for? You’ll ideally bring:
- A Bachelor’s degree specialising in business, accounting or taxation, or a relevant law degree.
- Around five years or more of relevant taxation experience, ideally including substantial U.S. tax exposure.
- Experience gained within an international accounting firm, law firm or similarly complex professional environment – based in the USA.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. taxation affecting partnerships and/or corporations.
- Experience with hedge funds, private equity, investment partnerships, insurance or reinsurance would be particularly valuable.
- A U.S. CPA, admission to practise law in a U.S. jurisdiction or another relevant U.S. tax qualification would be advantageous.
You should also be an organised and self-motivated manager who enjoys developing people, communicating with clients and working collaboratively with other leaders. Knowledge of Microsoft Office, ATX and GoSystem would be useful. Why make the move? Professionally, this is an opportunity to put yourself at the centre of a highly specialised international market. You will be joining a Big Four firm with a substantial Bermuda presence and the backing of a global network, giving you access to specialist knowledge, challenging assignments and opportunities to work alongside experienced professionals across different disciplines. The culture places real emphasis on development. Coaching, constructive feedback and challenging work are used to help people build their own career path, while collaboration means you’re part of a wider team rather than expected to solve every problem alone. At Manager level, that combination can be powerful: international clients, technically interesting U.S. tax work, leadership responsibility and the resources of a global organisation. Then there is Bermuda itself. Imagine finishing a client meeting in Hamilton and, not long afterwards, hearing the water against the shoreline. Warm evenings, ocean air, pastel-coloured streets and weekends built around the outdoors replace the rhythm of life in a large city. It is a small island with a disproportionately large role in global financial services – which means you don’t have to choose between serious career experience and an extraordinary lifestyle. If you have been waiting for a move that changes more than the name of the firm on your CV, Bermuda could be it.
